Squaw Valley opened its doors on Thanksgiving Day, 1949.  Eleven years later it hosted the 1960 Winter Olympic Games where the first Men’s Olympic downhill competition was won on metal skis.  In 1968 the Squaw Valley Aerial Reversible Tram was inaugurated. From the base, the tram travels 2.4 kilometres (1.5 miles) in 7 minutes to complete a vertical rise of 610 meters, (2000 feet).  Rocky Mountain Lift Services & Supplies was contracted out by Doppelmayr USA to supervise the slipping of the track ropes, the exchange of the haul rope, and inspect the aerial support cables.
