Mountain Village is in southwestern Colorado minutes from Telluride in the San Juan Mountains. The elevation of the town rises above Telluride to 2880 meter (9,540 feet). Connecting the two towns is an 8-mile gondola which consists of 2 parts and 4 stations. In 13 minutes, the gondola takes its passengers from Telluride at an elevation of 2667 meters (8,750 feet), passing Mountain Village station, and finally reaching the summit at San Sophia Station at an altitude of 3213 meters (10,540 feet). This mode of transportation is a clean commuting option; the electricity used to operate the Gondola is supplied by wind and solar power. Rocky Mountain Lift Services and Supplies Inc. was contracted out by Mountain Village to supervise the exchange of the three haul ropes on the gondola system.
