In simple terms zip lines consist of a pulley suspended on a wire rope mounted on an incline. It is designed to enable a user propelled by gravity to travel from the top to the bottom of the inclined cable by holding onto, or attaching to, the freely moving pulley. In professional versions zip line trolleys are used which consist of a frame or assembly with a pulley or sheave inside that runs along the cable. The user is attached to the trolley with a harness. Zip lining is a popular activity found at outdoor adventure camps or upscale resorts with applications found on a wide variety of terrain. The wire ropes can be very high and span across long distances. With all of the wire ropes having some degree of sag, their proper tensioning is important as it allows the ability to tune the ride of the zip line.
